This really isn’t what you expect to see in the middle of a busy city centre, but when the heavens opened during a recent visit to Sheffield we decided to join the queue of people waiting to go inside, despite the fact that we had no idea what we were about to walk into.
Given that the ticket sellers appeared to work at the local cathedral, it was quite possible we were walking into some sort of organised religious worship never to emerge quite the same again.
Thankfully, on this occasion it proved to be absolutely fine. In fact we discovered something quite incredible inside.
It’s a Luminarium. Which I now know is a sculpture people enter to be moved by a sense of wonder at the beauty of light and colour, according to the Architects of Air website.
This isn’t a sponsored post as we are not that organised. We simply stumbled across the Luminarium completely by accident and it was incredible. We spent an hour and a half inside, walking around, relaxing and listening to the music being played through the speakers inside. We emerged relaxed and de-stressed and more than a little impressed with the structure.
For the record, the sculpture is at Sheffield Cathedral Forecourt until July 28th and regularly tours the country and venues overseas. We paid £3.50 each to get in. Definitely money well spent and not a religious preacher in sight.
What great ideas...a) joining a random queue and b) the luminarium!

I think we should start joining random queues more often!

wow! it looks amazing! Bet IJ loved it! You should read 'Yes Man' by Danny Wallace - and live your life by it, you will find yourself joining many queues xx

What a great way to spend the afternoon and even more so as it was totally unexpected.

Thanks Rachel. It was fabulous. I've never been in anything like it before.

*coughs* I was there! how funny is that. I was the crazed woman chasing a small boy in a Spiderman T shirt frantically running round in circles - clearly it wasn't a place of contemplation for him. We went with the intention of seeing it, having been tipped off by a friend. OH snorted at the entry cost but soon changed his mind.
I'd love to see some of the other structures, would also consider going back at a different time and maybe experiencing it without children, suspect an altogether different experience.
Did you know it was in Canada last week?
That's my Silent Sunday not so Silent then!
