I've set myself a new challenge this week. Well, today actually.
I've decided at eight o'clock on the dot each evening I'm switching my iPhone off.
And I'm keeping it switched off.
At least that's the plan.
Anyone who shares my smartphone addiction knows that this will not be any easy task. But I've decided it's a necessary one.
My phone has become my constant companion. I simply can't exist without it. My fingers twitch when I'm not using it and I always have it within arms reach.
From 7am until often late into the evening I'm constantly tapping away on it. I'm checking the news, checking emails, checking Flipboard and reading Twitter.
I'll check the weather; I'll update Facebook. I'd probably check the exchange rate if I had access to it, just because it's something else I can access.
If there was an app for the number of times you've accessed your phone for information in the last hour, complete with graphs and downloadable reports, I'd probably check that too.
Sound familiar?
It's currently 7.55pm so I'm sitting here making the most I'd my last five minutes of phone time. And can you guess what I'm doing? I'm typing this post into the notes function on my phone. Then I'll email it to myself, copy it into Word, edit it and upload it to Typepad.
So I'm even blogging on my phone.
And did I mention I even have a link to my blog on my phone's home screen? I check that too. Just to make sure my blog is still there.
On the whole I love feeling connected to the rest of the world via my phone. But there is a downside over being constantly switched on. It messes with your sleep, in my case.
And read something that's heavy or upsetting or just a little stressful late at night and you might as well write off the next day.
So in the evenings I've decided to literally switch off. That's the plan at least. I'm not sure I'll be successful.
What about you? Could you take the iPhone challenge?
