This evening I have been discussing genetics, with a six year old.
Well, not actually genetics in any deeply scientific sense, more a brief discussion about appearance.
I asked IJ whether she thought I looked like her, whether she thought any of our features were similar.
There was an element of risk involved of course, kids can be most cruel at times, I wasn't sure exactly what she was going to say in reply.
It was a sensible question, nevertheless, and one that warranted a sensible response.
Or so I thought.
She looked me up and down in a slightly disconcerting manner, for slightly longer than was comfortable and absolutely necessary in my opinion, then took a deep breath before responding,
"Yes, you do look like me. You have a tummy and two legs."
I'm not sure now why I expected anything more really.
Next week ... quantum physics.
